ऋतवो ह वै देवेषु यज्ञे भागमीषिरे। आ नो यज्ञे भजत मा नो यज्ञादन्तर्गतास्त्वेव नोऽपि यज्ञे भाग इति।१।
तद्वै देवा न यज्ञुः। तऽऋतवो देवेश्वजानत्स्वसुरानुपावर्तन्ताप्रियान्देवानां द्विषतो भ्रातृव्यान्।२।
ते हैतामेधतुमेधां चक्रिरे। यामेषामेतामनुश्रृण्वन्ति कृषन्तो ह स्मैव पूर्वे वपन्तो यन्ति लुनन्तोऽपरे मृणन्तः शश्वद्धैभ्योऽकृष्टपच्या एवौषधयः पेचिरे।३।
तद्वै देवानामाग आस। कनीय इन्न्वतो द्विषन्द्विषतेऽरातीयति किम्वेतावन्मात्रमुपजानीत यथेदमितोऽन्यथा सदिति।४।
ते होचुः। ऋतूनेवानुमन्त्रयामहाऽइति केनेति प्रथमानेवैनान्यज्ञे यजामेति।५।

ऋतुओं ने देवों के यज्ञ में भाग मांगा,'हमको यज्ञ में भाग दो। हम को यज्ञ से न निकालो। हमारा भी यज्ञ में भाग हो'। देवों ने न माना। देवों के न मानने पर ऋतुएं असुरों के पास चली गईं जो अप्रिय तथा देवों के शत्रु तथा अहितकारी थे। उन असुरों ने ऐसी उन्नति की कि देवों ने भी सुना। जो असुर आगे आगे जोतते बोते जाते थे, पीछे से उसी को दूसरे असुर काटते और इकट्ठा करते जाते थे। इनके लिए मानो बिना जोते ही औषधियां झट से पक जाती थीं। ( असुर ज्यों ही बोते थे, वह स्वयं ही त्यों बिना समय बीते फसल पक जाती थी। आगे आगे बोते थे, पीछे पीछे काटते थे, क्योंकि ऋतुएं उनके साथ थीं।)
इससे देवों को चिंता हुई कि इस प्रकार शत्रु, शत्रु को हानि पहुंचावे यह तो छोटी बात है। परन्तु इसकी हद बढ़ गई। अब कोई ऐसा उपाय होना चाहिए जिससे इस प्रकार की अवस्था न रहे।
उन्होंने कहा- 'पहले ऋतुओं को बुलावें'। 'कैसे'? 'पहले इनको यज्ञ में भाग दें'।
The seasons demanded share in the Yajna, "Provide us with a share in the Yajna. Don't throw us out of the Yajna. Let there be a share in the Yajna, for us".
The deities refused. On this refusal from the deities, the seasons went to the demons, who were enemies of the deities and also harmful and unwanted.
The demons made good progress that was heard even by the deities. Some demons ploughed and sowed, and simultaneously other demons reaped the crops. The crops and vegetation grew up and ripened instantly for them. ( As soon as they ploughed and sowed, the crops ripened at once for them, since the seasons were on their side and helping them).
This made the deities anxious. The enemies are always harming each other. This is normal. But, now, the matter was serious. So some steps were needed to rectify the situation and change it.
They decided,"Let's invite the seasons back". "How"? "Let's provide a share in the Yajna to them".
